We first got to know the city with our Texan friend and his pick-up truck. We had gone around shady and jumbled neighborhoods composed of cheap hotels, crack users and kind of social housing in really bad conditions. Round the corner we walked by the skyscrapers which even at night would not give the shiny and neat look Cartagena has got. Neither could the renovated (and in process to be) old town. Panama Cuidad is odds and ends: old official buildings dating from the time the U.S were managing the canal, skyscrapers not even half-lit, poor neighborhoods, pedestrian streets in a safe district where one dark one was called “dangerous” by a police officer who advised us not to take it but would…
